Rory Freeman, #1 New York Times best-selling co-author of Skinny Bitch, an Oprah and Ellen DeGeneres favorite book, says in the foreword, “This book will open your heart, warm your soul, and make you proud to be a dog-loving woman.”

“When asked, ‘Betty, you never remarried! How can you live alone?’, my answer is simple: My golden retriever, Pontiac, is my saving grace.”
--Betty White, actress and author

“These heart-warming stories of dogs and the women who love them solidify the fact that the animal-human bond is so unique and necessary for enhancing one’s life. You’ll find a bit of yourself in each tale.”
--Vanessa Williams, actress and singer

“Perhaps because my older sister was a collie, I am never more myself than when in the presence of a dog. Kudos to Allen and Linda for sharing the myriad of ways dogs bring joy, healing, and gratitude into our lives.”
--Wendie Malick, actor and advocate

“These stories come from a diverse range of women about a diverse range of dogs and experiences, yet they share one common, uplifting theme: how women and dogs inspire and fulfill each other through love, dedication and companionship. The Andersons excel at celebrating that special bond.”
--Debrah R. Schnackenberg, Vice President, Emergency Services,
American Humane Association

“Once again the Andersons have produced an inspiring  book for women who love dogs, this time packed with stories and meditations that will make you smile, weep and be moved by scenes from Katrina rescues to the dog that dazzled David Letterman on his Late Night show. If you have a special relationship with your dogs this book is for you.’”
--Linda Tellington-Jones PhD (Hon), founder of the Tellington TTouch Method® and author of 19 books in 13 languages

"The rescuing works both ways again in Allen and Linda Anderson's Collection, Dogs and the Women Who Love Them: Extraordinary True Stories of Loyalty, Healing, and Inspiration, as canines who've suffered abuse, neglect or misfortune seek and comfort humans who've endured the same."
--Karen Holt, O Magazine

"The common theme running throughout is that dogs are not only faithful companions but also spiritual guides and messengers of love. The stories of Major, Sandy, Princess, Java, Lady, McDuff, and others will resonate long after the book is finished. VERDICT: All will touch the hearts of readers fortunate enough to enjoy or seeking this type of relationship."
--Susan Riley, Library Journal, Mount Kisco P.L., NY

Horses with a Mission:
Extroordinary True Stories of Equine Servicei

(
New World Library, September 2009)

Published by New World Library, September 2009 (publishers of The Power of Now, A New Earth, Creative Visualization, Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, The Way of the Spiritual Warrior, The Joseph Campbell series of books, Visionary Business, Zen Wrapped in Karma, Dipped in Chocolate, and many other “books that change lives.”)

New World Library is a proud member of the Green Press Initiative. This book is printed on 100% postconsumer-waste recycled paper.

About Horses with a Mission

With twenty-one dramatic true stories of courageous, loyal, and loving horses who found their life's purpose, this book reveals the wonders possible when both humans and horses are encouraged and allowed to follow their best instincts.

If you’ve ever thought that horses only display abilities on racetracks, in riding stables, in beer commercials, or in movies, you’re missing out on their ever-expanding services as sentient partners and willing coworkers.

This book introduces horses who aid in therapy sessions, give riders with disabilities freedom and mobility, heal childhood abuse, save lives, help people fulfill dreams, and bring messages of hope and unconditional love to those who need them the most.

The heroic equines you will meet include:

Molly, a three-legged pony and survivor of Hurricane Katrina, who had her story go viral on the Internet, land in the New York Times, and featured on CBS evening News. After her loss of a leg, surgery, and a prosthetic device, Molly inspired the people of New Orleans and admirers around the world. Now she visits children’s hospitals, nursing homes, and other places to spread her message of hope and recovery.

Sankofa, a wise-beyond-his-years Arabian stallion, made it possible for social studies teacher Miles J. Dean to complete a cross-country journey in tribute to African American ancestors. Dean’s goal was to heighten awareness about Black Cowboys and the contributions of African Americans. Millions of adults and school children followed their odyssey as Dean and Sankofa made history come alive.

Viola, a Norwegian Fjord horse who was imported from Norway to become a broodmare in upstate New York, eventually made her way to Tanya Welsch and MN LINC (Minnesota Linking Individuals, Nature, and Critters). Viola put her mothering skills to excellent use as a co-therapist in the animal-and-nature-facilitated psychotherapy, learning, and wellness program for youth and families. With her innate maternal wisdom, Viola is incredibly intuitive and nurturing, especially with at-risk youth.

Diana, wild mustang and lead mare of the rare Gila, Arizona herd of wild horses, protected her herd, teaching the great lesson of forgiveness. Her rescuer Karen Sussman documents the plight of wild horses who faced elimination until they found refuge on a ranch in the Badlands on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation.

Butch, a retired gelding, who showed such an unswerving belief in a profoundly mentally retarded girl that he restored a mother's hopes for her child's future.

"With hearts and minds open, we can learn from the wild and domesticated horses in this wonderful book."
--Joe Camp, author of The Soul of the Horse and creator of the films starring the canine superstar Benji

"You don't need to be an avid equestrian like me to truly enjoy this book, as the stories resonate with a spirit of hope and harmony that is shared by all creatures great and small."
--Alison Eastwood, actress, director, and producer (Clint Eastwood’s daughter)

"Through their courage, sensitivity, and kindness, the horses in this book become our inspiration and guides."
--Michael Mountain, former president of Best Friends Animal Society

"Horses with a Mission is an important book, one that will spark your imagination and inspire you to embrace the magical moments in life that happen every single day. It also reaffirms what any genuine horse lover knows: that these sentient creatures deserve our respect. This book was a joy to read."

Angel Dogs with a Mission: Divine Messengers in Service to All Life by Minnesota authors, Allen and Linda Anderson (New World Library, October 1, 2008), is a collection of twenty true stories about dogs who found their purpose in life and gave bucket-loads without expecting a return. The foreword is written by Marc Bekoff, PhD, professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

As with the hugely popular Marley & Me, millions of dog lovers will want to be inspired and entertained by the dramatic human-and-dog journeys in this new book. The amazing stories provide laughter, proof that miracles are possible, and tears - the good kind.

"This book is a tribute to the fact that many of our most effective doctors, nurses, therapists, police officers, emotional counselors, rescue workers, and spiritual teachers have four legs instead of two."

The Language of Miracles

"In Angel Cats, it is not the fog but the love that comes in on little cat feet. What a delightful collection of stories! There are stories here that warm the heart, and that set the soul to pondering: hmm, are those wings I see in dreamlike whisps coming off of my cat's shoulders? After you finish these stories, you won't have to wonder anymore --- you'll be convinced. Thank you, thank you Allen and Linda for continuing to remind us of our spirit connection to animals."
--Susan Chernak McElroy,
