The Deer at the Window

We
live near the mountains. Our house has a big patio that extends
from the back. When our mountains were getting crowded with campers
and there was no place to sleep outdoors, my husband and I often
took sleeping bags on to the patio and slept there at night.
In the morning, we awakened to the sight of deer standing nearby,
as if they had been watching over us all night.
Many people in our city complained about
the deer. I think they weren’t seeing the beauty that life
brings. They forgot to ask, “Why are you here, Dear Ones”
And to say, “Thank you for coming.” A deer helped me
to realize that I, too, haven’t always seen the many gifts
around me.
Sadly, my husband died. After his memorial
service, my family and I came home. As I gazed out the kitchen
window, a deer came up to the edge of the patio. He looked in
the window and right into my eyes. I could hear the words, “Everything
will be all right.”
