South Dakota Rescuer and Cheyenne River Sioux Work Together
to Save and Appreciate the Heritage of Wild Horses
Minneapolis, Minnesota, September 10, 2009
-- Karen
Sussman, wild horse rescuer in Lantry, South Dakota, has her story of the
preservation of one of America’s greatest historical treasures featured in the
unique new book Horses with a Mission: Extraordinary True Stories of Equine
Service (New World Library, September 2009) by best-selling, award-winning
authors Allen and Linda Anderson. “Diana: The Saga of a Wild Horse” tells how
Sussman, president of the International Society for the Protection of Mustangs
and Burrows (ISPMB), rescued Diana and the rare Gila, Arizona herd of wild
horses. As lead mare, Diana protected her herd and taught the great lesson of
forgiveness by ultimately making peace with humans. Horses with a Mission is
available in bookstores nationwide and online. www.horseswithamission.com
The
Gila herd had been facing elimination before Sussman brought it to a ranch, in
the Badlands, on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. With the Bureau of Land
Management (BLM) threatening to round up wild horses and exterminate them, this
story offers vital information about what a travesty and injustice this would
be under the current laws that are supposed to protect the mustangs.
Sussman
is a leading authority and advocate for the preservation of wild horses. Her
goal is to bring the conservation model she is developing on the acreage, where
four wild herds run, to other areas of the country and to develop ecotourism
nationally and worldwide.
Joe Camp, author of The Soul of the Horse and creator of
the films starring the canine superstar Benji, says, “Karen Sussman’s account
of rescuing and documenting a wild horse herd reminds all of us that native and
indigenous horses have been here for 52 million years. With hearts and minds
open, we can learn from the wild and domesticated horses in this wonderful
book.”
In addition to Sussman and Diana’s story the book
introduces horses who aid in therapy sessions, give disabled riders freedom and
mobility, heal childhood abuse, save lives, help people fulfill dreams, and
bring messages of hope and unconditional love to those who need them most.
Other stories in Horses with a Mission include:
- Sankofa, a
wise-beyond-his-years Arabian stallion, made it possible for social
studies teacher Miles J. Dean to complete a cross-country journey. Dean’s
goal was to heighten awareness about Black Cowboys and the contributions
of African American ancestors. Millions of adults and school children
followed the odyssey as Dean and Sankofa made history come alive.
- Viola, a Norwegian Fjord horse who was imported from
Norway to become a broodmare, made her way to Tanya Welsch and MN LINC
(Minnesota Linking Individuals, Nature, and Critters). Viola put her mothering
skills to excellent use as a co-therapist in the animal-and-nature-facilitated
psychotherapy program. Viola is intuitive and nurturing, especially with
at-risk youth.
The Andersons say, “Karen and Diana’s story proves that if
you’ve ever thought that horses only display abilities on race tracks, in
riding stables, in beer commercials, or in movies, you’re missing out on their
ever-expanding services as sentient partners and willing coworkers."
Carson Kressley, equestrian and Emmy award-winning TV host
as the “Fab Five’s” fashion expert on Queer Eye, says, “This collection of
stories will remind anyone who has ever had a horse as a best friend,
confidante, and soul mate of what a special gift that can be.”
